See no Evil by William Wilberforce Chewa, Leopard Rock, Unique, 68cm high by 89cm wide by 32cm deep, Abstract, Classical, Fantasy, Performing Arts, Sculpture
See No Evil by William Wilberforce Chewa transforms a solid piece of Leopard Rock into a powerful statement on perception and awareness. This unique Shona sculpture stands 68cm high, stretches 89cm wide, and reaches 32cm deep, commanding attention with its striking presence.
Carved from Leopard Rock, a stone prized for its rich, mottled patterns, this abstract face emerges with strong, simplified features. The shape is bold and slightly asymmetrical, echoing the organic spirit of the stone. Most striking, though, are the eyes: deep holes carved clean through the face. They pierce the surface yet offer no sight.
The smooth curves and sharp lines play with light and shadow, creating an almost mask-like quality. At first glance, the empty eyes feel haunting, yet they invite thought. The figure cannot see and perhaps does not want to. The title, See No Evil, pushes this idea further, hinting at the choice to look away or protect oneself from harsh truths.
From every angle, the sculpture shifts, one side feels open and exposed, the other closed and guarded. The Leopard Rock’s natural colours with swirls of dark grey and warm earthy tones add depth. Rooting this abstract face firmly in its African heritage.
Chewa’s piece stands as a reminder that what we refuse to see can define us as much as what we witness. In its stillness, See No Evil speaks volumes about silence, blindness, and the power of looking within.
