Ripple Effect by Chemedu Jemali, Springstone, Unique, 82cm high by 56cm wide by 44cm deep, Abstract sculpture
This piece by Chemedu Jemali is a unique Shona springstone sculpture it depicts a human bust, but the face is transformed into a series of ripples that distort its features. These ripples radiate outward in flowing waves, turning a recognizable form into an abstract study of movement and transformation.
At the lower part of the face, the carving opens into a hollow space, a circular void created by the spreading ripples. This negative space draws the eye through the sculpture, adding depth and contrast to the solid stone. From there, the ripples climb upward, expanding and overlapping across the surface. Their polished finish catches light, emphasizing curves and edges, while the natural weight of the springstone keeps the bust grounded.
The shoulders and base of the bust remain solid, giving stability to the fluidity above. Jemali contrasts the permanence of the stone with the illusion of flowing movement, turning a heavy material into something that appears dynamic and shifting. The result is both figurative and abstract, rooted in the human form yet dissolving into rhythm and pattern.
Ripple Effect embodies transformation and fluidity within stone. Its balance of solidity, hollowness, and polished surfaces makes it a striking and contemplative piece, one that invites viewers to look closer at both form and absence.
