Social Acceptance by James Phiri is an expressive Shona Avocado stone sculpture that explores connection, belonging and unity through a continuous abstract form. Measuring 94 cm high, 62 cm wide and 39 cm deep, this unique sculpture combines flowing movement with carefully balanced curves, creating a composition that feels both harmonious and dynamic.
Rising from a solid base, the sculpture gradually separates into a series of elongated strands. These forms sweep outwards before curling and bending back towards one another, eventually creating a continuous flowing loop. Consequently, the eye travels naturally around the composition, following each strand as it connects visually with the next.
Moreover, Phiri contrasts smooth, rounded curls with carefully defined points and subtle folds. Some sections turn gently inwards, while others overlap or bend across the composition, giving the sculpture a layered sense of depth. At the same time, the open spaces between the strands allow light to pass through, making negative space an important part of the overall design.
The natural character of Avocado stone further complements these organic forms. Its solidity provides a compelling contrast to the apparent flexibility of the looping strands, which seem to fold and move despite the permanence of the material. The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 1 person, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
