Evison Nyamasoka, Graceful, Avocado stone, unique, 60cm high, 44cm wide, 18cm deep
Graceful by Zimbabwean sculptor Evison Nyamasoka is an elegant, one-of-a-kind abstract Shona sculpture, individually hand-carved from avocado stone.
The sculpture is distinguished by three separate open loops carved directly through the stone, creating a flowing composition of curves, openings and interconnected forms. These carefully shaped voids introduce a wonderful sense of lightness to the solid stone, allowing light and the surrounding space to become part of the sculpture itself.
There is a natural rhythm to the piece, with the eye drawn from one opening to the next and around the sculpture’s gently sweeping contours. The balance between solid stone and open space gives Graceful its distinctive character. While the smooth, rounded forms create a feeling of harmony, movement and elegance that perfectly reflects its name.
The beauty of the avocado stone adds another dimension to the work. Its natural colour, tonal variations and markings complement the fluidity of the carved form, ensuring that the character of the original stone remains an important part of the finished sculpture.
Designed to be appreciated from multiple viewpoints, Graceful changes as you move around it. The three openings overlap and interact differently from each angle, creating shifting silhouettes and revealing the skill required to carve such an intricate, flowing form from a single piece of stone.
At 60cm high, this substantial table-top sculpture has a strong presence while remaining versatile enough for display on a console, side table, substantial shelf or pedestal. Its combination of organic curves and contemporary abstraction makes it particularly well suited to both modern and more traditional interiors.
Entirely hand-carved and unique, Graceful is an expressive example of contemporary Shona stone sculpture. The solidity of natural stone transformed into a composition that feels remarkably fluid, open and light.
