French Grill by Jonathan Rose is a unique bronze and stone sculpture measuring 176 cm high, 126 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. The work presents a striking interplay between material, form, and imagination. At its centre rests a large slab of stone, suspended in mid-air by a short chain that connects it securely to a sturdy stand. This suspension gives the heavy form an unexpected sense of lightness, as if it hovers in place rather than rests under its own weight.
Within the stone, the artist has incorporated a bronze grill, upon which four frogs sit. Their placement feels deliberate, almost ritualistic, as if caught in a moment that blends humour, irony, and commentary. The frogs add both narrative and symbolic weight to the piece. Transforming the sculpture into something more than a static object. They animate the work, suggesting themes of nature, consumption, and perhaps even cultural critique, hinted at by the title French Grill.
The contrast between the rough solidity of the stone and the smooth, worked quality of the bronze enriches the sculpture’s visual tension. The suspended slab creates a sense of balance, while the frogs invite closer inspection and reflection. The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 2 people, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
