Flint Totem by Joseph Rusbridge, Steel, Mixed Metal, Found Objects, Unique, Over 5m high, Sculpture

This piece by Joseph Rusbridge is an abstract mixed-metal sculpture standing over 5 metres high. The towering form rises vertically like a contemporary totem pole, filled with stylised faces stacked along its length. Each face differs from the next, and the transitions between them give the sculpture an energetic upward rhythm.

As the eye moves upward, the forms shift from compact shapes to more open structures. Eventually, the piece reaches a dramatic finale: a set of broad, angular wings spreading out at the top. These wings introduce a sense of lift and motion, guiding the viewer toward the sky.

Rusbridge constructs each facial element from steel, mixed metals, and an assortment of found objects. Bolts, gears, plates, rods, and other reclaimed items become eyes, mouths, or decorative markings. Because of this, every section carries its own personality. The materials retain their natural colours, rusted browns, weathered silvers, dark greys, and occasional hints of paint left from previous uses. This approach keeps the sculpture raw, honest, and deeply tactile.

The piece embraces contrast. Smooth steel panels sit beside rugged, pitted metal scraps. Regular shapes meet asymmetrical fragments. Yet, the composition remains unified through its vertical structure and rhythmic spacing.

Flint Totem feels both ancient and industrial. Its layered faces recall traditional totems, while its materials celebrate modern fabrication and reuse. The result is a powerful, towering sculpture that blends mythology, craftsmanship, and environmental awareness into one bold vertical ascent.
