The Chakana is a significant symbol in Andean culture, representing the bridge between the earthly and spiritual realms. Also known as the Inca Cross, some might argue that this design is not original, and while that is partially true, the piece itself is remarkably unique. This uniqueness emerges from its texture, composition, and, above all, the way it has been crafted.
Chakana (Inca Cross) by Richard Marti is a one of a kind sculpture. Designed by Marti and meticulously forged by Bottero, an Italian blacksmith, it consists of 40 sections of iron and weighs approximately 750 kilograms. In addition, the sculpture is adorned with 24-karat gold leaf and rests on a limestone base. The cross measures 115 cm high, 140 cm wide, and 10 cm deep, while the overall dimensions, including the base, are 144 cm high, 140 cm wide, and 76 cm deep.
The Chakana embodies the three levels of existence in Inca cosmology:

Hana Pacha, the upper world inhabited by higher gods

Ukhu Pacha, the underworld of ancestors and spirits
Moreover, the central hole in the cross signifies the passage between these realms. Additionally, the stepped design reflects the terraces found in Incan architecture, while the outer cross aligns with the cardinal points, indirectly referencing the sun god, the highest deity.
