Victoria Rance
Born
Victoria Rance was born in Streatley, Berkshire, United Kingdom, in 1959.
Education
She completed a foundation course at North Oxfordshire Technical College (1978–1979) before graduating with a Fine Art degree from Newcastle University (1979–1983), where she also spent a year sculpting in Mexico. She later undertook an MA at Kingston University, completed in 2009.
Career
Rance has been based in London since 1985, working as both a sculptor and educator. Over the course of her career, she has participated in numerous exhibitions, commissions, and public art projects. Her work has been shown in both group and solo exhibitions, and she has undertaken significant ecclesiastical and public commissions.
Materials
She works with a wide range of materials, selecting them according to the spatial and conceptual demands of each project.
Style & Subject
Rance’s practice centres on the creation of spaces, both physical and imagined, that explore human interaction within social and architectural environments. Her work often evokes psychological tensions such as safety, containment, and imprisonment. Influenced by both contemporary and historical architecture, as well as functional objects, she examines the relationship between utility and artistic expression.
