Tom Hare
BORN
Tom Hare was born in the United Kingdom.
EARLY LIFE
Tom developed an early interest in making and natural materials. At some point he undertook a weekend course in willow weaving, becoming captivated with the process and materials, which marked the beginning of his sculptural practice.
CAREER
Tom is a sculptor working primarily with greenwood, particularly willow. Following his introduction to willow weaving, he developed a full-time practice creating large-scale woven sculptures, often commissioned for site-specific installations. His work is exhibited and installed internationally in both public and private contexts.
MATERIALS
Tom works primarily with willow and other greenwood materials, using steel armatures as structural frameworks for his woven forms.
STYLE AND SUBJECTS
His sculptures are large-scale, highly detailed interpretations of plants and natural forms. Working from observation, he translates organic structures into woven three-dimensional works. His practice is closely connected to nature, including coppicing and sustainable harvesting, which informs both his process and design approach. He describes the process as grounding and humbling, emphasising the connection between material, landscape, and making.
AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS
Tom has completed major site-specific commissions internationally, including installations at Kew Gardens, the Chelsea Flower Show, Chelsea Physic Garden, Natural History Museum Oslo, RHS Garden, Wisley, Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, and a Fortnum & Mason autumn window display.
