Tafunga Bonjisi
Born
Tafunga Bonjisi was born in Ruwa, Zimbabwe, in 1982, alongside his twin brother Garikai.
Early Life
Tafunga grew up within the Bonjisi family, a highly creative and accomplished lineage of Zimbabwean sculptors. He is part of the third generation of contemporary Shona stone artists and was strongly influenced by his older brother Lameck, a master sculptor of the second generation.
Education
He attended school in Ruwa and received his formal education in Tafara. He began sculpting full time once he was finished with school.
Career
Tafunga learned sculpting under the guidance of his brother Lameck before beginning his own independent work in 2000. Since then, he has worked as a full-time sculptor, developing a distinctive artistic voice grounded in tradition yet uniquely his own. His work has been exhibited internationally, and is a frequent guest at various workshops across Europe.
Materials
Tafunga works primarily with hard stones, including Springstone, Cobalt, and Opal. All of which are local to Zimbabwe.
Style & Subject
His style is rooted in the classic approach of earlier masters, combined with his own dynamic yet balanced forms and refined finishes. Tafunga is particularly skilled in depicting the human body, with works that convey strong emotional narratives.
Tafunga Bonjisi sculptures are available from the sculpture park.
