Stewart Chapenga

Born
Stewart Chapenga was born in 1983 in Guruve, Zimbabwe.

Early Life
He was raised in Guruve, with his early exposure to sculpture coming from the rural community of artists at the Sanganai Art Group, where he learned basic sculpting techniques. At the age of seventeen, he began assisting his brothers Casten, Donald, and Tavengwa Chapenga, whose influence encouraged him to develop his own artistic style.

Education
He completed his primary and secondary education at Chifamba Primary School and Chifamba High School.

Career
In 2006, Chapenga moved to Hatfield, Harare, to pursue sculpting professionally. His work has since reached an international audience, featuring in exhibitions and private collections across Germany, Holland, Australia, Canada, and the United States.

Materials
He works primarily in stone, all being sourced locally in Zimbabwe.

Style & Subject
Chapenga’s work is rooted in the Shona sculptural tradition. His sculptures are predominantly abstract, drawing inspiration from the mystery of everyday life and reflecting a keen observation of human emotions and movement. Despite their abstract nature, his themes are universal and resonate with audiences worldwide.

Stewart Chapenga is an Zimbabwean Shona artist who displayed in the summer 2025 Spirit in Stone exhibition at The Sculpture Park.
