Steven Murenza
Born
Stephen Murenza was born in 1982 in Rushinga, Zimbabwe.
Early Life
He grew up in a family of six boys, five of whom became sculptors. His two older brothers, Julius and Rufaro, were particularly influential, mentoring him from a young age. By the age of ten, he was already assisting them, learning how to finish sculptures and gradually developing his own carving skills while still in school.
Education
He remained in school until completing his O Levels, balancing his education with hands-on training in sculpture during his spare time.
Career
In 2000, Murenza moved to Chitungwiza, an area known for its strong sculpting tradition, where he continued refining his skills and gaining exposure. In 2010, he established an outdoor studio space in Harare, where he is now based. His work has since reached an international audience, with sculptures sold to collectors and galleries across Zimbabwe, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
Materials
He works primarily in stone, allowing each individual piece to guide the direction of the sculpture.
Style & Subject
Murenza’s work moves fluidly between representational and abstract forms, often characterised by a refined simplicity. Inspired deeply by nature, he incorporates organic textures and forms, even while living in an urban environment. His subjects range from birds in flight to human figures, such as bathing women, capturing both movement and stillness within a single piece. His sculptures aim to express positivity, cultural meaning, and a celebration of life.
Steven Murenza sculptures are available from the sculpture park.
