Rufaro Ngoma

Born
Rufaro Ngoma was born on May 29 1981, in Nyanga, Zimbabwe.

Early Life
Ngoma grew up surrounded by artistic influence, particularly inspired by the sculpture gallery at the Nyanga Craft Centre. As a youth, he spent much of his time herding cattle, playing banjo guitar, and moulding clay animals, activities that quietly shaped his path toward sculpting.

Career
Ngoma began his professional journey under the mentorship of renowned sculptor Cephas Mashaya. Over time, he developed his own reputation and became known as the “Golden Boy” of Zimbabwean sculpture. His work has gained international recognition, with exhibitions and collectors spanning Germany, Holland, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada, and the United States.

Materials
Stone is Ngoma’s primary medium, through which he creates both small, intimate carvings and large-scale sculptural works.

Style & Subject
Ngoma’s work ranges from delicate, personal pieces to bold, monumental sculptures. His artistic drive is deeply intrinsic, he describes himself as being “born an artist,” compelled by an internal force to create. His sculptures often reflect a balance between artistic passion and the practical demands of sustaining a livelihood.

Exhibitions
Ngoma’s work has been exhibited internationally, particularly in the United States, as well as across Europe and Africa, where it is held in both gallery collections and private ownership.

Rufaro Ngoma sculptures are available from the sculpture park.
