Ralph Brown was a British sculptor, born in 1928 in Leeds, England. He passed on April 3rd 2013 at the age of 84.
Education
Brown studied at Leeds Art School, Hammersmith Art School, and the Royal College of Art. He later returned to the Royal College of Art as a visiting tutor from 1958 to 1973.
Career
Brown worked as a sculptor since his graduation. He emerged as part of the post-war generation of British sculptors, gaining recognition in the 1950s. He took on various commissions throughout his career, his most noticeable being the large bronze sculpture Meat Porters, which was commissioned for Harlow New Town in Essex.
Style & Subject
Working as a sculptor throughout his life, Brown remained deeply focused on the human figure. While this central theme persisted, his style evolved significantly over six decades, reflecting changing approaches and developments in his practice.
Awards & Exhibitions
He first exhibited in London in 1953, where his work attracted early support from Henry Moore. Brown went on to exhibit widely in solo and group shows across the UK, Europe, and the United States. His sculptures are held in public and private collections worldwide. He was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1968 and became a Royal Academician in 1972.
