Prosper Katanda
Born
Prosper Katanda was born on 7 June 1982 in the Mazoe District, Zimbabwe, and passed away in 2024.
Early Life
He spent part of his childhood in Harare, where he completed his primary education. He later returned to his rural home to finish secondary school in 1999. After leaving school, he briefly worked as a bookbinder in Chinhoyi.
Education
He trained as a sculptor through apprenticeship rather than formal art education, learning directly from established artists within the Tengenenge art community.
Career
Katanda began his sculptural career at the Tengenenge Art Community in Guruve, where he met and was mentored by Tendai Rukodzi, whom he regarded as his master. He worked as Rukodzi’s assistant for several years, gaining experience before moving in 2002 to Tsindi Gallery in Harare’s Hatfield suburb, where he was based later in life. He also collaborated for an extended period with sculptor Witness Bonjisi. His work gained international exposure in countries including the USA, Germany, Canada, and parts of Asia.
Materials
He worked primarily as a stone sculptor within the Zimbabwean tradition.
Style & Subject
His style is characterised by a restrained use of detail, refined to a precise and controlled finish. His aim was to create sculptural forms with clarity and simplicity while maintaining expressive strength.
Exhibitions
His work was exhibited internationally, with exposure in the United States, Germany, Canada, and various Asian countries, as part of his ambition to show his work beyond Zimbabwe.
