Paul Margetts

Born
Paul Margetts was born in 1959 in the UK.

Education
Margetts trained as a blacksmith at Hereford Technical College during the 1970s. He later studied Art and Design at Bournville College in the 1980s and continued his studies at Birmingham Polytechnic after returning to Britain in 1988.

Career
Margetts built a long and successful career as a blacksmith, sculptor, and designer, developing an extensive body of ironwork designs. After completing a traditional four-year apprenticeship near his home in Worcestershire, he travelled internationally, working with metals in several countries, including three years in Zimbabwe where he trained rural smiths.

Upon returning to the UK, he established his studio-forge in Belbroughton. For 35 years, he collaborated with Lucy Quinnell at Fire & Iron Gallery, producing thousands of iron artworks. After more than three decades of exhibiting at the gallery, he retired in 2024, passing on the continuation of his designs to Tom Quinnell.

Materials
Margetts works primarily with steel and other ferrous and non-ferrous metals, combining traditional blacksmithing methods with modern fabrication techniques.

Style & Subject
His work is characterised by innovative and functional metal sculpture, ranging from decorative interior objects to large-scale exterior commissions. Subjects include both abstract and naturalistic forms. His output spans domestic and architectural metalwork, including fire baskets, lighting, clocks, and bookends, as well as outdoor works such as gates, railings, bridges, fountains, sundials, and garden furniture.
