Patrick Sephani

Born
Patrick Sephani was born in 1980 in Tafara, a township of Harare.

Early Life
Sephani was the youngest of four children and showed an early interest in art, particularly in drawing, design, and sheet-metal work during his school years. He began sculpting at a young age, initially working with small off-cuts at the home studio of Tapfuma Gutsa.

Education
He attended Mwanandishe Primary School before continuing his secondary education at Tafara High School, graduating in 1997.

Career
Sephani began sculpting seriously in 1995 when he became an apprentice under Agnes Nyanhongo and Joseph Munemo at their studio in Greendale, Harare. He was also influenced by his brother, Jim Sephani, and worked alongside prominent artists including Dominic Benhura.

His work has been widely collected internationally, with pieces held in private collections across Canada, United States, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.

In 2004, he travelled to South Africa, serving as sculptor-in-residence at Boschendal Winery Estate. Between 2005 and 2007, he spent extended periods in the Netherlands teaching both practical and theoretical art. From 2008 to 2014, he was artist-in-residence with Zimsculpt. In 2015, Sephani emigrated with his family to Vancouver, where he became part of the Ukama Gallery.

Materials
Sephani works primarily in stone, drawing on its natural qualities to shape expressive sculptural forms.
