Passmore Mupindko
Born
Passmore was born on 15 September 1975 in Marondera (Guruve district). He is the first-born in a family of five.
Early Life
Passmore spent his early years in Horse Shoe, where he completed his primary education. During his final examinations, his father passed away, forcing him to leave school and support his family. In 1992, he began carving in wood as a means of livelihood, producing functional items such as bowls, spoons, and trays. His early development was influenced by Sadman Nyamhondoro.
Career
Passmore initially sold his wood carvings in Harare and surrounding farms. In 1998, he visited the Tengenenge Art Community, where its founder Tom Blomefield encouraged him to transition from wood to stone carving. He subsequently joined the community, living and working there as a full-time artist alongside his brother-in-law Alexander Makaki.
Materials
Passmore works primarily in stone, having transitioned from earlier wood carving.
Style & Subject
His sculptural work focuses on stylised natural forms, including leaf bowls designed to attract birds, slender guinea fowl, shells, and leaf-headed figures.
Exhibitions
His work has been exhibited internationally in France, Netherlands, South Africa, Germany, and Denmark.
