Malcolm Robertson was born in Edinburgh in 1951. He pursued formal art education, developing his skills in sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art, where he gained a sculpture diploma in 1974, followed by a teaching diploma in 1975.

He is based in Scotland, after having been a part time resident in Florida for 16 years.
