Bywell Sango

BORN:
Bywell Sango was born in 1979.

EARLY LIFE:
Bywell began sculpting at a young age and was strongly influenced by his brother, Brighton Sango. During school holidays, he assisted his brother, learning techniques and developing an understanding of stone carving. This early hands on experience helped him gradually establish his own artistic identity and style.

LIVES:
He lives and works in Mudindo, where he continues to create his sculptures.

EDUCATION:
Bywell’s training was largely informal, learning through practice and mentorship rather than formal education. This is common among Zimbabwean sculptors, where skills are often passed down through family and community.

CAREER:
Sango has developed a successful career as a stone sculptor, gaining recognition for his distinctive abstract style. His work has been exhibited internationally, allowing him to reach a global audience and contribute to the continued popularity of Zimbabwean sculpture.

MATERIALS:
He works with a variety of Zimbabwean stones, including cobalt stone, opal stone, springstone, and serpentine. These materials are valued for their durability and natural beauty, and they influence the final form of his sculptures.

STYLE AND SUBJECTS:
His work focuses on expressing human emotions through abstract, often cubic forms. Bywell allows the natural shape of the stone to guide his designs, resulting in unique, organic pieces that reflect both emotion and material.
