Bruce Kirby

EARLY LIFE:
Kirby developed a strong connection to the outdoors and natural landscapes early in life. His experiences working in rugged environments, including building mountain footpaths in Scotland, helped shape his appreciation for natural materials and terrain.

EDUCATION:
Bruce trained in Architectural Masonry and carving at Weymouth College in 1998. This training led to work on both new construction projects and the restoration of listed buildings, where traditional stone working skills are essential.

CAREER:
Before fully focusing on sculpture, Kirby had a varied career. He has a background in geology, completing an honours mapping project that involved six weeks of wild camping at high altitude in The Alps. He later worked in Portugal and the North Sea in geological roles.

These experiences, combined with his earlier work in Scotland, contributed to his deep understanding of landscapes and materials. Over time, he transitioned into stone carving and sculpture, drawing on both his technical training and life experiences.

MATERIALS:
Kirby primarily works in stone, using traditional carving techniques. His knowledge of geology informs his choice of materials and how he approaches shaping them.

STYLE AND SUBJECTS:
His work is heavily influenced by travel and the natural world. Having travelled extensively, including to Morocco, the Himalayas, Madagascar, and across the UK, his sculptures often reflect landscapes, natural forms, and a sense of exploration.
