Tall Woman by Sphias Chivbungo, Stone, Unique, 135cms high by 33cms wide by 34cms deep, Female, Figurative, Women sculpture, Lady
Tall Woman by Sphias Chivbungo is a unique Shona Springstone sculpture, standing 135 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 34 cm deep. It depicts a poised woman holding back her hair, radiating elegance and quiet strength.
The figure stands with one hand resting on her hip while the other reaches behind to gather her hair. She shifts her weight onto one leg, bending the other slightly in a graceful pose. Her expression is calm and neutral, with her gaze directed forward. One side of her hair is tied up, while the other flows freely, creating visual contrast and movement.
She wears a long, form-fitting dress that leaves the upper body mostly exposed. The garment cascades down her figure and pools naturally at her feet. Small rounded discs trail down the front, adding subtle decorative flair. These folds of the dress also serve as a stable base, grounding the sculpture.
Chivbungo contrasts textures to enhance the piece. The skin is smoothly polished, revealing the rich black tones of the Springstone. In contrast, her hair, earrings, and dress retain a more rugged, lightly grey finish, emphasizing natural variation in the stone.
The overall effect balances abstraction with realism. The figure’s curves and flowing dress emphasize feminine form, while the polished and rugged contrasts highlight craftsmanship. From every angle, the sculpture conveys poise, movement, and the enduring beauty of Shona stone carving.
