Laying Dogs is a carved wooden sculpture that presents two separate dogs resting in mirrored poses. Each dog measures 20 cm high, 78 cm wide, and 40 cm deep. Together, the figures create a calm and balanced composition.
At first glance, both dogs appear relaxed and settled. Each lies low to the ground. Their heads rest gently over their front paws. Meanwhile, their legs stretch out comfortably behind them. Although the dogs face different directions, their poses closely echo one another. This mirroring creates rhythm and symmetry across the sculpture. As a result, the viewer’s eye moves smoothly from one figure to the other.
The dogs keep their eyes open. They look quietly ahead rather than sleeping. This detail adds a sense of quiet alertness. It also gives the sculpture a gentle, lifelike presence. Despite the simplicity of the forms, the animals remain clearly readable and expressive.
The surface treatment enhances this feeling. The artist smooths the wood overall, creating soft transitions along the bodies. At the same time, carved recesses introduce subtle details. These marks suggest muscle, joints, and facial structure without overwhelming the form. Consequently, the sculpture balances realism with restraint.
Natural wood tones define the final impression. Beige and soft grey hues flow across the surface. These colours emphasise warmth and material honesty. Light catches the smooth planes and shallow carvings, adding depth and quiet movement.

The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 1 person, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
