Motherly Care by Chris Chivandire, Springstone, Unique, 26cm high by 58cm wide by 38cm deep, Animals and Birds, Children, Family , Nature , Love sculpture
This piece by Chris Chivandire is a unique Shona sculpture carved from springstone. It shows a mother ducker deer lying with her young. The mother tucks her legs neatly beneath her body and lifts her head in a calm, watchful pose. Beside her, the baby rests close, its head pressed gently against her side.
The springstone surface carries a smooth polish that enhances the flowing shapes. Light runs along the curves of the mother’s neck, the folds of her body, and the smaller form beside her. These polished planes create contrast with subtle natural textures, adding depth and character. Together, the figures radiate warmth and tenderness.
Although modest in height, the sculpture feels broad and grounded. Its width and depth give it stability, while the compact composition emphasizes closeness. As the viewer moves around the piece, new angles reveal the connection between mother and child. Flowing lines guide the eye seamlessly across both figures, reinforcing their bond.
Chivandire combines strength and sensitivity in equal measure. The stone gives weight and permanence, while the subject reflects care and intimacy. Each detail, from the mother’s attentive tilt to the baby’s quiet rest, adds to the sculpture’s presence. Motherly Care celebrates the timeless bond between parent and child, offering a work that feels both enduring and tender.
