Hornbill by Try Makza, Springstone, Unique, 68cm high by 24cm wide by 20cm deep, sculpture

This piece by Try Makza is a unique Shona Springstone sculpture, it captures five hornbill birds perched along a single upward-reaching branch. The branch rises naturally, with each perch carefully trimmed to keep the composition compact.

Four hornbills occupy the lower branches. Each looks upward, their long tails cascading down, creating a rhythm along the branch. At the top, the fifth hornbill gazes around, surveying the group below. This arrangement gives the sculpture a sense of movement and hierarchy, as if the birds are caught mid-conversation.

The artist captures feather and bark textures in a slightly abstract and stylised way. The birds’ bodies are simplified yet recognisable, while the branch retains its rugged, organic feel. Polishing enhances the natural patterns in the stone, revealing blacks and greys that contrast beautifully across the forms.

The combination of abstraction and realism gives the piece energy and cohesion. Each bird interacts with the others while remaining an individual, balancing unity and individuality. The sculpture conveys both stillness and life, capturing a quiet moment in the natural world.

Hornbill is a polished yet organic celebration of bird life, showcasing Try Makza’s skill in shaping Springstone. Its elegant lines, thoughtful composition, and natural tonal contrasts make it a striking and dynamic artwork.
