Evison Nyamasoka, Listening to the Angels, Avocado Stone, Unique, 64cm high, 38cm wide, 20cm deep
Listening to the Angels by Zimbabwean sculptor Evison Nyamasoka is an evocative, one-of-a-kind abstract Shona sculpture.
Hand-carved from beautiful avocado stone, the sculpture has a wonderfully fluid, upward-reaching form. The stone sweeps and swirls through a series of graceful curves. Two carefully carved voids are integral to the composition: one positioned close to the base and a second incorporated into the upper swirl. These openings break up the solidity of the stone, introducing light and space while creating a sense of movement throughout the piece.
The upper section appears to curl and reach upwards, giving Listening to the Angels an expressive, almost contemplative quality. The intriguing title invites the viewer to personally interpret the sculpture.
The natural qualities of the avocado stone are an important part of the finished artwork. Its distinctive colouring, tonal variations and markings complement the flowing carved surfaces and ensure that this unique sculpture possesses an individual character.
Entirely hand-carved and unique, Listening to the Angels beautifully combines the strength and permanence of natural stone with flowing movement, open space and a sense of quiet contemplation.
