Flautist Maquette (1990) by Sean Crampton is a table-top bronze figurative sculpture depicting a male musician in the act of playing the flute. Standing upright and holding the instrument to his mouth, the figure is distinguished by a characterful pointed hat, which gives the composition a theatrical and almost timeless quality.
Crampton captures the gesture of musical performance through the positioning of the figure’s hands, arms and head. The flute creates a strong horizontal line across the upper body, contrasting with the elongated vertical form of the standing musician. This combination gives the sculpture a pleasing sense of balance and rhythm, while the musician’s concentrated pose suggests a moment absorbed in performance.
The pointed hat adds an element of individuality and character to the figure, contributing to the work’s distinctive silhouette.
