Buffer 1 2 3 4 by John Foster is a unique welded sculpture measuring 32 cm high, 273 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. The work transforms four cut train buffers into an abstract industrial composition, balancing weight, rhythm, and tension. Each buffer sits in sequence along a horizontal line, yet none are identical in placement. Some lean or tilt slightly, while others rest more firmly, creating a dynamic sense of motion across the piece.
Each buffer is split through the center, dividing its rounded form into uneven halves. This division exposes their inner strength and material density, turning functional railway components into sculptural forms. The cut edges contrast with the original curvature, adding sharpness and energy to the piece. Foster’s welding binds these massive steel fragments together, their arrangement suggesting both mechanical precision and organic movement.
The sculpture invites viewers to see beauty in industrial remnants. Its rough surfaces retain traces of use, scratches, rust, and weld marks, emphasizing the material’s past life. Yet, through composition and rhythm, Foster elevates these elements into art. The sequential placement of the four buffers recalls the rhythm of train motion, each unit echoing the next while maintaining individuality.

The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 2 people, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
