Biggie Chikodzi, Faces of the World, Magnesite, Rose Quartz, Aventurine & Granite Stone, 78cm high, 24cm wide, 24cm deep

This piece by Biggie Chikodzi is a powerful vertical stone sculpture that rises with quiet authority and emotional depth. Standing 78 cm high and measuring 24 × 24 cm, this work commands presence without excess, inviting close, contemplative viewing.

Carved from magnesite, rose quartz, aventurine, and granite, the sculpture brings together stones chosen not only for their beauty, but for their symbolism and strength. Each face is individually shaped, then carefully balanced one upon another, largest at the base, gradually becoming smaller toward the summit. This upward progression creates both physical tension and visual harmony, echoing themes of ancestry, continuity, and human resilience.

Chikodzi works under the intense sun of rural Zimbabwe, using traditional Shona stone-carving methods passed down through generations. Every cut is deliberate. Every surface bears the mark of endurance. The natural variations in colour and texture across the stones give each face its own identity, while the stacked form unifies them into a single, shared story.

More than an object, Faces of the World functions as a sculptural narrative. It speaks of survival, memory, and collective spirit, of lives layered through time, each supporting the next. The vertical composition draws the eye upward, suggesting aspiration, growth, and the fragile balance between past and future.

This is a one-of-a-kind artwork, suitable for collectors seeking authentic contemporary African sculpture with cultural depth and gallery-level presence. It stands confidently in both private and curated spaces, offering meaning as well as form.
