Taro by Hongxun Jin, Variegated Black Marble, Unique, Abstract sculpture 200cm high including plinth
Taro by Hongxun Jin is a unique abstract sculpture carved from variegated black marble. Standing 200 cm high including its plinth, the work presents a striking curved form that rises gracefully before tapering into a sharp spike at both ends. The surface, polished to a smooth finish, reveals the natural variations in the marble, with subtle shifts of tone that add depth and movement to the stone.
The sculpture bends in a continuous arc, yet a connecting element bridges the two sides of the curve near the base. This small link creates a defined gap, introducing negative space that draws the viewer’s eye through the form. The open section lightens the otherwise solid structure, balancing weight with delicacy. It also emphasizes the rhythm of the curve, making the piece feel both grounded and fluid.
The pointed tips contrasts with the rounder flow of the main body, giving the work tension and energy. The marble’s black surface enhances this drama, absorbing light in some areas while reflecting it in others. From different angles, the sculpture shifts in character—at times appearing sharp and bold, at other times soft and continuous.
Jin’s Taro captures the interplay between mass and void, curve and point. It demonstrates the power of form to suggest motion even within heavy stone, transforming marble into an elegant gesture of strength and refinement.
