Sisyphus by Won Lee, Bronze, Metal, Edition signed 3 of 8, 59cm high, 28cm wide, 25cm deep, Body, People sculpture
Sisyphus by Won Lee captures a timeless struggle in bronze, standing 59 centimetres high and crafted in a signed edition of eight. The sculpture depicts a lone figure straining beneath the weight of a massive rock, their body coiled in tension and determination. Rather than presenting a static pose, Lee emphasizes the effort, the torque of muscles, and the pull of gravity, making the viewer feel the monumental task in miniature form.
The figure’s posture immediately communicates both burden and resilience. Legs bend, back arches, and arms stretch upward as if every fibre works to resist collapse. Bronze, with its dark, tactile surface, accentuates the play of light and shadow over sinew and form, making the effort palpable from every angle. As one moves around the piece, the viewer notices subtle shifts in line and balance, the rock tilts slightly forward, the figure’s weight presses into its base, and tension pulses through the torso, reminding us that struggle is dynamic, never static.
Lee abstracts certain details to emphasize universality, the face remains understated, the limbs smooth and elongated, and the rock simplified, allowing the viewer to focus on the story of perseverance itself rather than on individual identity. These choices give the work a symbolic resonance, Sisyphus becomes everyone who faces unyielding challenge, yet continues with stubborn determination.
Ultimately, Sisyphus transforms bronze into a study of endurance, strain, and human resolve. Through careful modelling, commanding composition, and the interplay of light across metal surfaces.
