This piece is a bold and unusual sculpture by Doug Cocker(opens in new tab). It stands just over a metre high. The piece is a large head, built from fragments of tree bark and cast in bronze. The surface is rough and deeply textured. Natural ridges and cracks suggest facial features, but nothing is exact. It is not a traditional likeness. It is a form shaped by nature and reimagined by the artist.
The head feels ancient. It looks as though it has emerged from the earth. The bark(opens in new tab) gives it a raw, almost primitive quality. It is part creature, part landscape. Strange, powerful, and deeply expressive.
Cocker collects bark, then assembles it into a rough human form. He then casts this form in bronze. This process turns soft, natural material into something hard and permanent. The result is both fragile and enduring. It speaks of decay, but also survival.
Grotesque Head II blurs the line between human and natural forms. It asks us to look at nature as something alive, expressive, and full of character. The sculpture is haunting. But it is also deeply rooted. It reminds us that the human face, even in its most distorted form, can still hold meaning.
Delivery & Installation
The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 2 people, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
