Still Life (1995) by Sean Crampton is a unique welded bronze sculpture presenting a three-dimensional interpretation of the traditional still-life subject. Compact and table-top in scale. The composition depicts a small table upon which a bottle and a single piece of fruit have been carefully arranged.
Crampton reduces the familiar elements of a still life to their essential sculptural forms. The upright bottle provides a strong vertical element within the composition, while the smaller, rounded form of the fruit introduces a contrasting shape and scale. Both objects are brought together by the simple geometry of the table beneath them, creating a balanced and self-contained arrangement.
Executed in welded bronze, the work has a distinctly constructed quality. The material and method of fabrication give the sculpture a tactile, expressive character. This transforms the ordinary domestic objects into a permanent sculptural composition. Rather than seeking precise naturalistic representation, Crampton explores shape, proportion, surface and the spatial relationships between the individual elements.
The subject also creates an engaging dialogue between sculpture and the long tradition of still-life painting. Objects conventionally depicted on a flat surface are here given physical form, allowing the composition to be experienced from multiple viewpoints. As the viewer moves around the sculpture, the relationship between the bottle, fruit and table continually changes.
Measuring 17 cm high and 22.5 cm across, Still Life has an intimate scale ideally suited to close viewing and display on a table, shelf, console or pedestal. Created in 1995, it is a unique work, rather than part of an edition.

The Sculpture Park will organise and pack each sculpture, then hand it over to a courier for delivery. We insure all deliveries during transit to protect against any damage or loss.
