Torroidal by Richard Cresswell, Stainless Steel, Edition Limited, 230cm high by 130cm wide by 130cm deep, Sculpture
This piece by Richard Cresswell is a polished stainless-steel sculpture measuring 230cm high, 130cm wide, and 130cm deep. The structure rises from a single tapered pole, which narrows slightly as it reaches upward. This clean vertical line creates a steady sense of lift. Then, near the top, the sculpture shifts dramatically.
A cluster of flat circular discs curves outward and wraps into a continuous looping form. Each disc sits slightly apart from the next, and this spacing allows light to pass through the structure. As a result, the piece feels open, airy, and rhythmically layered. The discs follow a smooth toroidal path, giving the sculpture its distinctive swirling motion.
Because the stainless steel is highly polished, every surface reflects the surroundings. Light glides across the edges, while shadows settle between the discs. This play of brightness and darkness changes as the viewer moves. Consequently, the form feels alive and constantly shifting.
Although the structure appears simple at first, the looping geometry adds complexity. The circles build a sense of rotation, while the slim pole offers balance. Together, they create a sculpture that feels both grounded and fluid.
Cresswell’s emphasis on smooth surfaces and precise spacing strengthens the work’s modern character. Torroidal becomes a study in movement, reflection, and the elegance of pure geometric form.
