Soar by Innocent Nyashenga, Springstone, Unique, 47cm high by 15cm wide by 9cm deep, Abstract, All Sculpture, Tribal sculpture, Flight of a Bird
This sculpture is carved from dark springstone and polished to a smooth black sheen. A single sweeping curve defines the bird as it glides on its side in mid-flight. One long wing stretches forward in a fluid arc, while the other follows behind in a gentle taper. A small rounded head anchors the form, creating a clear focal point without breaking the sculpture’s elegant rhythm.
Minimal shapes guide the composition, letting the stone’s natural weight contrast with the sense of effortless movement. Curves flow cleanly from one point to the next, giving the impression of a bird cutting through open air. Light glides across the polished surface, deepening the sense of motion as reflections shift along each contour.
Abstract detailing keeps the piece focused on gesture rather than realism. No feathers interrupt the smooth planes; instead, long uninterrupted lines reinforce the idea of freedom and flight. Each angle offers a fresh silhouette, from a narrow, aerodynamic profile to a wide, wing-like sweep when viewed from above.
Nyashenga’s shaping of springstone highlights balance and clarity. The form feels both grounded and weightless, merging simplicity with expressive movement. Through this pared-back design, the sculpture captures the quiet strength and grace of ascent, allowing viewers to sense the lift and flow of wings suspended in open space.
