Radian by Thomas Joynes is a striking contemporary stainless steel sculpture that explores movement, repetition and the relationship between colour and form. Measuring 100 cm high by 90 cm wide, and reaching an overall height of 176 cm including the charred oak plinth, this unique work combines an expansive abstract composition with a strong architectural presence.
Joynes constructs the sculpture from numerous slender stainless steel rods, arranging them into a dramatic fanned formation. From a concentrated central point, the rods spread outwards in a sweeping, almost circular movement. However, rather than completing the circle, the form leaves a deliberate open gap. Consequently, this interruption creates visual tension while giving the sculpture a sense of continuing movement beyond its physical boundaries.
Furthermore, the blended patinated finish transforms the character of the steel. Richer green tones gather towards the centre, where the rods overlap and the composition appears at its most concentrated. In contrast, the rods become progressively brighter towards their tips, revealing the reflective quality of stainless steel. As light moves across these surfaces, the sculpture continually changes in appearance.
Meanwhile, the substantial charred oak plinth provides an earthy contrast to the precision and luminosity of the metal. Its dark, textured surface anchors the energetic form above and enhances the sculpture’s contemporary character.

The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 1 person, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
