Lean Back by Tinei Mashaya, Springstone, Unique, 117cm high, 78cm wide, 58cm deep, Abstract, Body, Figurative sculpture
Lean Back by Tinei Mashaya is a Shona springstone sculpture measuring 117 cm high, 78 cm wide, and 58 cm deep. The piece captures the abstract form of a woman’s back, focusing on the subtle curve of her figure. The stone remains largely in its natural state, with its rough, unpolished surfaces creating a raw, organic presence.
The sculptor smoothed and polished only select areas to define the form. A small portion of the buttocks is carefully shaped, contrasting with the untouched expanses of the rock. These few polished spots reveal a deep, glossy black that stands out against the natural dull brown of the springstone. This interplay of textures draws the eye to the subtle curve and suggests the human form without fully modelling it.
The edges of the stone are cut and smoothed, framing the figure while preserving the rock’s inherent irregularities. Small, incised areas give hints of shape and depth, but the sculpture relies on the natural contours of the material to suggest the body. The contrast between untouched surfaces and polished highlights creates tension between rawness and refinement, emphasizing the elegance of simplicity.
Lean Back conveys quiet strength and understated sensuality. Its combination of natural stone and selective shaping allows the viewer to appreciate the material’s character while sensing the presence of the human form. The work captures both abstraction and intimacy, offering a striking example of Shona stone carving.
