Cherished by James Phiri is an elegant Shona Avocado stone sculpture that explores connection, unity and flowing movement through a tall abstract form. Measuring 126 cm high, 57 cm wide and 42 cm deep, this unique sculpture combines a commanding vertical presence with a graceful arrangement of twisting and interconnecting strands.
Rising from a solid, grounded base, the composition gradually separates into several elongated forms. Each strand travels upwards before curling, twisting and reconnecting with another, creating a continuous visual rhythm throughout the sculpture. Consequently, the eye naturally follows these sweeping lines from the substantial base towards the more intricate forms above.
Two distinctive curls define the composition, with one positioned around the middle and another forming towards the top. Moreover, the strands come together to shape these rounded openings before narrowing into clearly defined points at their ends. This contrast between broad curves and tapered tips gives Cherished both softness and direction, while the open spaces introduce a feeling of lightness within the solid stone.
As the strands overlap and separate, negative space becomes an essential part of the design. Light passes through the openings, while changing shadows emphasise the sculpture’s depth and layered construction. Furthermore, the natural character of Avocado stone complements the organic movement of the form, reinforcing its connection to growth and the natural world.

The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 1 person, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
