Healthy Flower by Donald Chapenga, Stone, Unique, 235cm high by 40cm wide by 38cm deep, Abstract, Nature sculpture
Healthy Flower by Donald Chapenga is a unique Shona stone sculpture standing an impressive 235 cm high, with a width of 40 cm and a depth of 38 cm. Its tall, slender form draws the eye upward, while the fluid curves guide it in a gentle, continuous motion.
The piece unfolds in a flowing, twirling shape, reminiscent of a flower stretching toward the sun. Its abstract design avoids literal petals or stems, instead capturing the essence of growth and vitality through movement. The twisting lines give the sculpture a sense of energy, as though it is still unfurling.
The stone’s natural surface enhances this vitality. Smoothly polished areas catch the light, creating highlights along the curves, while more textured sections add depth and contrast. This interplay between finish and form gives the piece both elegance and grounding.
Chapenga’s carving emphasizes balance. The sculpture appears delicate in its narrow points, yet its base anchors it firmly. The upward flow conveys optimism and resilience, reflecting themes often celebrated in Shona art.
From different angles, Healthy Flower shifts in character, sometimes appearing graceful and slender, other times bold and expansive. It invites viewers to move around it, engaging with its form as it changes with perspective. Ultimately, the sculpture feels like a celebration of life’s continuous unfolding, captured in stone.
