Head by Doug Cocker, Fabricated bronze, 65cm high, 160cm wide, 98cm deep. Unique.
Head by Doug Cocker transforms the human face into a striking landscape of surreal abstraction. Measuring 65cm high, 160cm wide, and 98cm deep, this unique fabricated bronze sculpture stretches, fractures, and reshapes familiar features, inviting viewers to reconsider identity, form, and perception. Cocker manipulates scale and contour boldly, creating tension between recognition and distortion, merging realism with the uncanny.
The bronze surface adds depth and dynamism. Smooth, reflective planes catch light, while rough, textured patches create contrast and visual interest. These variations guide the eye across the sculpture, emphasizing the complexity of the abstracted face. Cocker elongates elements and rearranges features, producing a dreamlike composition that constantly shifts depending on the viewer’s perspective. Light plays across the contours, enhancing the sense of movement and revealing subtle details that transform with each angle.
The sculpture’s horizontal orientation intensifies its surreal impact. The extended width allows the face to unfold like a landscape, with planes, curves, and indentations suggesting emotion, energy, and hidden narrative. As viewers circle the piece, new discoveries emerge, from subtle distortions to dramatic exaggerations, keeping engagement continuous and interactive.
Cocker balances technical precision with imaginative freedom. He transforms bronze into a medium of exploration, challenging conventional portraiture while embracing abstraction. Head communicates human experience through unexpected forms, blending emotional resonance with visual intrigue. By bending reality yet maintaining recognizable features, the sculpture provokes reflection on perception, identity, and the surprising ways human emotion can manifest in three dimensional space. It stands as both a portrait and a surreal journey, capturing imagination as much as likeness.
