Delightful by Michek Nyamapsoka, Avocado stone, Unique, 63cm high, 30cm wide, 15cm deep
Delightful is a unique Shona stone sculpture by artist Michek Nyamapsoka, hand-carved from Avocado stone. Standing 63 cm high, this elegant abstract sculpture is defined by its graceful, flowing form and beautifully curling shape, creating a wonderful sense of movement and balance.
The sculpture rises upwards in a fluid, organic composition, with sweeping curves that appear to unfold and curl around one another. Its continuous lines draw the eye through the piece, giving the solid stone an unexpected feeling of lightness and energy. The open spaces within the form are as important as the stone itself. They create changing shapes and perspectives as the sculpture is viewed from different angles.
Nyamapsoka’s skilful carving highlights the natural character of the Avocado stone, with its subtle variations in colour and markings adding individuality and depth to the finished work. Smoothly polished surfaces emphasise the sculpture’s sensuous curves and invite appreciation of both its visual and tactile qualities.
Contemporary in appearance while rooted in Zimbabwe’s renowned Shona stone-carving tradition, Delightful is an expressive and uplifting sculpture. Its slender proportions and flowing silhouette make it an elegant statement piece for a contemporary interior, gallery setting or private art collection.
