McDonald Kufa, Best Friends, Avocado stone, Unique, 63cm high, 50cm wide, 29cm deep
Best Friends is a unique Shona stone sculpture by artist McDonald Kufa, hand-carved from Avocado stone. Standing 63 cm high, this substantial abstract piece explores the strength, connection and enduring nature of friendship through a beautifully balanced sculptural form.
At the heart of the composition is an elegant loop combined with a carefully carved knot. These interconnected elements create a powerful visual representation of two lives joined by friendship, suggesting loyalty, trust and a bond that remains strong over time. The continuous, flowing lines give the sculpture a sense of movement, while the knot provides a strong focal point and reinforces the theme of lasting connection.
Kufa has skilfully worked with the natural qualities of the Avocado stone, allowing its distinctive colour, markings and character to become an integral part of the finished sculpture. Smooth, rounded surfaces contrast with the complexity of the intertwined form, encouraging the piece to be viewed from different angles.
Both contemporary and deeply rooted in Zimbabwe’s celebrated Shona stone-carving tradition, Best Friends is an expressive and highly decorative work. As a unique sculpture, it would make a striking focal point in an interior, gallery space or private art collection.
