Winston Nyekete
Born
Winston Nyekete was born on January 1, 1971, in Buhera District.
Early Life
He attended school from 1979 until completing his O’ Levels in 1989. Afterward, he moved to Harare, where he worked in construction and engineering. He had no artistic background during this time.
In 1999, after falling ill with tuberculosis, he left his mining job and moved from Chegutu to Chitungwiza for treatment. During this period, he began visiting the Chitungwiza Arts Centre, where he developed a strong passion for sculpture.
Career
Nyekete began carving in 2000. His work gained international reach, and he has travelled widely exhibiting his sculptures. His artistic journey was shaped by a late entry into the field, transitioning from industrial work to sculpture after his illness.
Materials
He works primarily with hard stones, including granite, marble, leopard rock, and hard serpentine.
Style & Subject
His work is inspired by wildlife and nature, centered on the theme “Living in Harmony with Nature.” His sculptures reflect a commitment to environmental awareness and the preservation of natural ecosystems.
