Wenqin Chen was born in 1979 in Fujian, China.
Lives
He currently lives and works in Xiamen, China.
Education
Chen studied at the Art & Design School of Fuzhou University (1995–1999) and continued at the Academy of Art and Design, Tsinghua University, Beijing. He later earned a Master’s degree at the Winchester School of Art, Southampton University, UK.
Career
Since 2007, Chen has taught at Xiamen University while actively pursuing his artistic practice. Since the 2000s, he has explored the relationship between life and art through Chinese calligraphy, sculpture, and installation. Key works include Human Civilization, Spirit and Strength (2004), Specimens (2007), and Up Side Down (2007), which won recognition at the Saatchi Gallery, UK.
Subjects of Work
Chen’s work investigates the origin, growth, and essence of life. He draws inspiration from human forms, embryos, and cycles of life, creating installations like Your Turn (2008) and Standing Egg (2009), as well as series such as Before a Baby Comes Out of Its Mother’s Body (2011–2015). His sculptures (Is it Mine? 2013–2015; Loving 2010–2017) explore microscopic structures and material interactions, while his paintings (Stories of Story 2015–present; Red Yellow Blue in Net 2019–present) convey life’s vitality through form, color, and space. Chen combines observation, scientific inquiry, and artistic expression to reflect life’s complexity and energy.
