Trevor Bates

Born
Trevor Bates was born in 1921 in Eltham, Kent. He died on 27 April 2008 in Belleville, Ontario.

Early Life
Trevor was the grandson of sculptor Harry Bates. During World War II, he served in the RAF, flying both Spitfires and Hurricanes, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) after the war.

Education
He was educated at Harrow School and later after the war, studied at the Slade School of Art in London from 1947 to 1951, where Henry Moore was among the teaching staff. In 1950, he earned his Fine Art Diploma and won the Slade’s Sculpture Prize for that year.

Career

Trevor worked full time as a sculptor, before later moving to Canada, becoming a citizen in 1967. He taught art in New Brunswick until his retirement in 1986. After retiring, he moved to Belleville, Ontario, with his artist wife, Bunny Bates, where he focused full-time on sculpture, painting, and drawing.

Materials
He primarily worked in bronze.

His work often featured animals and birds, characterized by spiky, surreal forms.

Exhibitions

  • Held solo exhibitions at the Waddington Galleries in 1959 and the early 1960s.
