Tonderai Marezva
Born
Tonderai Marezva was born in 1976 in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Career
Tonderai began sculpting in 1993. In 1999, he started to work alongside his brother, who was the resident artist at the Chapungu Sculpture Park. He was exposed to and influenced by other resident artists at the park, and was encouraged by Dominic Benhura to develop originality in his approach to sculpting. He later established himself as a well-known artist in his own right. He works as a full-time Shona sculptor, and his work has gained international recognition.
Materials
Tonderai works with locally sourced Zimbabwean stone, often cutting and shaping it to his own specifications.
Style & Subject
His sculptures explore the duality of human nature, representing both the finite and unknown aspects of people. He often contrasts different finishes within a single piece, such as combining deeply polished dark stone with lighter, more natural surfaces. His work is also influenced by African traditions, particularly beliefs in ancestral spirits, reflecting a balance between the spiritual and mortal realms.
Tonderai Marezva sculptures are available from the sculpture park.
