Tom Smith

Born
Tom (Nicholson) Smith is a UK-born artist.

Early Life
Tom’s passion for “making things” developed early, originally leading him to pursue oil painting. However he found this medium to be unsatisfying to work with for him, being more drawn to three-dimensional works instead.

Career
Tom works as a full-time sculptor, currently living and working in Surrey. He origionally had a background in landscape design, although now he works producing seating, public art, and commissioned sculptures. He was accepted by the Prince’s Trust to establish a business focused on designing products and crafts connected to the restoration of derelict woodland.

Materials
He works primarily in wood, using a wide variety of tree species. His process often includes carbonisation to darken the surface before waxing to enhance depth and highlight the grain.

Style & Subject
Tom’s work takes inspiration from many places, including natural forms, landscapes, architecture, and animals. He creates both abstract and figurative sculptures, with his subject matter changing from piece to piece. He enjoys working with wood greatly, with his works often responding directly to the natural grain and character of the wood, allowing each piece to retain a sense of its original wooden form.
