Tendai Rukodzi
Born
Tendai Rukodzi was born in Guruve, Zimbabwe, in 1973.
Early Life
Tendai attended primary and secondary school in Guruve. While still at school in 1990, he began sculpting by assisting his brother, Edronce Rukodzi.
Career
After completing his O Levels in 1992, Rukodzi began creating his own works. By 1993, he was working at Tengenenge, one of Zimbabwe’s leading artist communities. In 1995, he moved to Harare, where he sculpted and worked alongside Joe Mutasa and Ray Chirambadare, during this period, his work began appearing in established galleries all across the world. He would later return to work with Tengenenge in 1999, becoming one of their best-selling artists. His sculptures have since been exhibited internationally, reaching countries including South Korea, Malaysia, Japan, China, and Israel.
Materials
His work is carved from locally sourced Zimbabwean stone.
Style & Subject
Tendai works within the Shona sculptural tradition, Rukodzi explores a range of styles and subjects, most notably the female figure, depicted with varying degrees of completion and abstraction.
