Tawanda Makore
Born
Tawanda Makore was born in Kwekwe, Zimbabwe, in 1979.
Early Life
He was inspired from an early age by his uncle, Akence Makore, and influenced by the cubic sculptural style of Zotoh Sango.
Career
Makore developed his own distinctive technique and joined an artist group in Harare in 2006, emerging as part of a new generation of Zimbabwean sculptors. His work has been exhibited by collectors in Europe and the United States.
Materials
He works with locally sourced Zimbabwean stone.
Style & Subject
His work has evolved into a unique approach he calls “Vision Sculptures,” characterised by three-dimensional, experimental forms that balance essence and outward appearance. He selectively abstracts detail to guide the viewer’s interpretation, reflecting an abstract, conceptual approach. His inspiration is drawn from natural forms, particularly clouds, a reference to the meaning of his surname in Shona.
Tawanda Makore sculptures are available from the sculpture park.
