Born
Steven Gregory was born in 1952 in Johannesburg.

Education
Steven moved to London to study sculpture at St Martin’s College of Art from 1970 to 1972, returning to complete his degree in 1977. He spent time during his studies to learn various traditional skills and tool work, before going on as an apprentice stonemason with the company Ratty and Kett. During his apprenticeship, he worked on historic buildings such as Westminster Abbey and Hampton Court. He gained the City and Guilds Craft certificates in stone masonry, as well as winning the Worshipful Company of Masons Prize during his apprenticeship.

Career
Gregory has exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally, including in Germany, France, Italy, Iceland, the USA, and the Czech Republic. Since 2009, he has exhibited at Pangolin London in both solo and group shows.

Materials
His work frequently involves stone carving, reflecting his early training, but he also works in bronze and other media. Since 2002, he has used bones and skulls sourced from scientific antiques, as well as materials such as spent bullet cartridge cases and discarded nitrous oxide canisters.

Style & Subject
His work is characterised by a dark sense of humour and an interest in the macabre. He explores themes of life and death, often combining unsettling subject matter with a playful or celebratory tone.

Exhibitions
Gregory has held many exhibitions thoughout his sculpting career. His 2005 solo exhibition Skulduggery at the Cass Sculpture Foundation received critical acclaim. He has also participated in major exhibitions such as Thinking Big: 21st Century British Sculpture at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, Venice (2002–03), and Animal Fantastique in Paris (2002). He is a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and an elected Artist Friend of Jesus College, Cambridge.
